THE DOCTORS

DR BERNARD CHIN (pictured right) is the founder and principal of Cairns Gastroenterology since 2007. He graduated from the University of Adelaide and completed his Gastroenterology training in Sydney. He has an interest in General Gastroenterology and bowel cancer screening. Dr Chin is committed to delivering equitable bowel cancer screening access to disadvantaged areas of Australia. As such, he contributes a few weeks a year to open access endoscopy centres in the outlying fringes of rapidly growing Melbourne where the uninsured day surgery fees are subsidised by the participating Gastroenterologists

DR JOHN OMBIGA (pictured left) completed his Gastroenterology training in Sydney followed by two years as a fellow in Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Perth. He has been a staff specialist Gastroenterologist at Cairns Hospital (Queensland Health) since 2007. Cairns Gastroenterology has been providing administrative services to Dr Ombiga since 2013 when he entered private practice. He is a general Gastroenterologist and liver specialist with interests in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, IBS, Hepatitis, cancer screening and endoscopic resection of large polyps.

DR MONTRI GURURATSUKUL has a PhD from Adelaide in GI motility and completed his training in Cairns (where he won the Registrar of the Year award in 2014) and Brisbane in 2016. He went on to further his Interventional GI training in Sydney and Vancouver. He specialises in ERCP and EUS (liver, bile duct and pancreatic diseases).

Montri practices General Gastroenterology in private and is the current acting head of General and Interventional Endoscopy services at Cairns Base Hospital. He continues to be the driving force in training our Gastroenterology advanced trainees who will be tomorrow’s new specialists in Regional Qld. He has a particular passion for developing country health services: he contributes about a month every year to an Interventional Gastroenterology unit in Bangkok (advanced cutting edge endoscopic procedures) and teaching junior specialists in rural Thailand
